The Epilight, for children with Epilepsy

The Epilight uses warm light colours and specific sounds to accelerate a child’s sleep cycle to the REM stage by increasing the melatonin levels in their brains. This alternative treatment known as sleep therapy decreases the risk of seizure activity and allows children to sleep peacefully without worry.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions amongst Australians and it is characterised by recurrent seizures which are caused by a temporary disruption of the electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can be triggered from a variety of sources, but the most common and dangerous is sleep deprivation. Sleep can affect the frequency, occurrence, timing, and length of seizures in epileptics of all ages, however, the most affected are children. Cognitive impairments are associated with childhood epilepsy and can relate to underlying aetiology, abnormal brain structure and epileptic activity. These same cognitive impairments can also negatively impact their IQ, memory, behaviour, and social life.

“…It can have social impacts, financial, employment…it impacts ease of access to other things in life…I think my memory has somewhat been impacted…”

BENCHMARKING – Sleep-related product evaluation matrix

There are many abundant sleep products that vary depending on the target demographic and benefits they offer for their users. This product matrix evaluates each of the following products’ safety and complexity they provide for their users. This evaluation matrix displays the most common products used by epileptics to improve their quality and quantity of sleep through various methods. Hatch Rest, YogaSleep, and LectroFan use white noise and sleep therapy machines to accelerate the user’s sleep cycle towards the third stage of sleep known as deep sleep or N3 sleep. This stage is critical for restorative sleep, particularly in people with epilepsy, thus decreasing the risk of seizures.

BENCHMARKING – Epilepsy and sleep-related medication evaluation matrix

Medication is the most common form of treatment for epileptics and allows for a quick and reliable recovery process. Most medications are easy to take and often decrease the risk of seizure activity within the brain, however, they can also deliver possible negative side-effects for their users. This product matrix includes multiple different medications commonly used for people with both epilepsy and sleep issues. Due to the fact that both go hand-in-hand and can often negatively impact one another, these brands and types are proven to be the most effective.

DESIGN PROCESS

Introducing the epilight

Solution

When closed, the white exterior of the triangular sectors resemble the shape of the moon, and cover the inner light to create a dimmer shine for it’s users.
The face can be opened and set at an angle around the main light using gear mechanisms along an outer ring. Once fully opened the eight triangular sectors reveal a sun design with the inner light dome containing a smiling face with sunglasses.
The sliding knobs control the volume of the sounds that correspond to the icon below. Wind, fire, rain, thunder, forest, and bird chirps. These sounds can be played simultaneously and provide a soothing presence for the user. The power button next to the knobs also lights up when the product is turned on.
The coloured buttons on the light dome control the colour of the bulb inside. The middle switch turns on the light on and off. The rotating light dimmer on the left can control the brightness of the light inside.
There is a charging port for a USB-C cable on the back of the product.
