VitaLink is an integrated patient monitoring system combining an on-body patch and in-ear sensor to provide continuous, real-time vital data. Designed to enhance safety and comfort for patients waiting in emergency care, it reduces delayed detection, eases staff workload, and reassures patients through seamless, non-intrusive monitoring.
VitaLink is designed to revolutionize the monitoring of waiting patients in emergency departments, in which waiting and uncertainty have often been known to increase anxiety and danger. By offering a combination of wearable technology, it allows for constant, non-intrusive monitoring that is an improvement in terms of safety and comfort, as well as offering real-time data for healthcare professionals.
Patient care in emergency departments poses substantial risks of safety when deterioration is detected late after a long waiting period. This is because a patient monitored will have large periods of time between monitoring sessions. Also, current wired technology is a hindrance when it comes to a patient’s freedom of motion.
Primary research included surveys with 10 patients and interviews with two emergency department nurses. The findings revealed that intermittent vital monitoring and long waiting periods created safety risks for unnoticed deterioration, while discomfort from long wait and uncertainty reduced overall patient comfort and confidence.
